I got off to a bit of a late start, breaking my string of early starts (2). I had a bit of trouble finding the town's laundromat. I penned in the changes to my next map section while I washed my gear, then rolled out into a sizable thunderstorm. I stopped at a funeral home (yes, really) and dug out my rain gear. Then I pedaled through the storm, which wasn't as bad as I had expected. The worst part of rain is the rain gear, which gets really hot and squeaks as you pedal. In fact, any repetitive noise will quickly drive you insane if it's the only thing you hear for several hours.
The rain moved east, so I plunged through the worst of it and emerged after about 45 minutes, then stripped off the rain gear. Of course, I was soaked with sweat, which -- as always -- makes me wonder if the rain gear is really all it's cracked up to be.
I'm really starting to adore Kansas, with its flat to rolling roads and wide open views. I enjoyed a slight tailwind into Chanute, where I set up camp. A Relay for Life charity event for cancer was going on nearby, so I went over to watch the festivities and have dinner. All in all, it was a very easy day of riding.
